An up and down journey on ancient roads
along the valley of the Dora Baltea River.

15.7 km   317 m up   360 m down

THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS!

After looking at the location of the house where Saint Anlseme, 11th century archbishop of Canterbury lived, we set out. We left the Roman city of Aosta past a triumphal arch and over the roman bridge, and headed up the hillside on the north side of the valley of the Dora Baltea river, following the path of a covered "ru" water distribution system, until we came to Quart castle, originally 12th century but continually modified over the years.
The afternoon sun got hotter and hotter, with Sue's penknife reading 29 degrees! We took a wrong turn at a misleading arrow, and ended up struggling uphill through irrigation sprays. When we finally got back on the Francigena, we had a pleasant walk by the "rus" water channels, until we got to a steep downhill section with loose pebbles under foot. We picked our way painstakingly downhill, while joggers frolicked past us. We finally arrived at the hotel we'd booked for the night tired and exhausted, only to find there was no evening meal and the restaurants in the villag weren't open. So we got some pizza slices and beer to take back to tbe room. Our feet were killing us!
