Zumaia to Deba and Mutriku

We set off across country from Santa Klara hostel, failing to find a breakfast cafe, and then choosing the wrong road for the cliffs. The official Camino followed a minor road inland, whereas we wanted to take the coastal path to visit a famous geological site. Luckily, we managed to cut across to the viewpoints for a view of the amazing strata which had been eroded at different rates to reveal 50 million years of geology. The strata had been folded up when the Spanish tectonic plate collided with the main European one, and the resulting nearly vertical plates are still being peeled off into the sea. This unofficial route involved a lot of steep up and down sections, although we had some relief on a section of disused railway, and so we arrived exhausted at Deba, where the church and tourist office were closed when we arrived. We had lunch in the old town square and then went back to the tourist office to get bus times to Mutriko, where we had booked an AirBnB, even though it was some distance from the official Camino. Unfortunately we got off the bus at the wrong stop, so we had to wander through the old town, and then with the help of a local, who seemed to say that he helped out at at hostels on the camino, found our room.
