We returned to Sion by train and bus, and set of along the hillside, through the vineyards, to Sierre. The church of Varen, perched on a steep cliff, made an interesting stopping place! Salgesh has the remains of a hospice of the knights of St.John, who used to protect pilgrims, and are remembered in the symbol for St. Johns Ambulance.

Arriving in Sierre, we walked around the lake and up the hill to visit the trappist monastery of Göronde.
