As we had to wait several days in Bayonne for a train back home, we decided to take the train and bus to
St. Jean-Pied-de-Port to have a look around. Normally the train goes all the way through to the village,
but one section was under repair, and so there was a replacement bus service. It poured with rain,
but we still managed to get a feel for the town - and the throngs of pilgrims there, and collected a
stamp from the pilgrims' office.
Historical note: The town was founded in the 12th century after the original nearby town of
Saint-Jean-le-Vieux was razed to the ground by Richard I of England.
