Belloc to Bayonne

18th April 2022

A long walk,
mainly on tarmac,
along the Adour river

Arrived at the outskirts of Bayonne

We left the monastery after a good breakfast, satisfied that we had achieved our first, perhaps main, goal on the Camino! We headed towards Urt along winding country roads, and then down to the Adour river, which we basically followed to Bayonne. It was a long walk, predominantly on tarmac, to Bayonne and Sue got so exhausted that she collapsed to bed when we reached the IBIS Budget htel we had booked. The fact that we had to scramble up an embankment to the bridge over the river hadn't helped!

(We ended up staying several days in Bayonne in the pouring rain, because we couldn't book seats on a TGV back home because of French holidays! We took advantage of this to visit the sea-side at "La chambre d'amour", using the excellent local bus service, and also to take a day trip to St. Jean-Pied-de-Port)
