Le Puy-en-Velay was our goal for 2019, but is the origin of the Chemin du Puy, one of the principal
starting points of the pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela in France.
The city is famous for its cathedral, for a kind of lentil, and for its lace-making
We took two days there to do some sight seeing!
Le Puy is a beautiful town. Although a couple of the sights were up long flights of stairs
(la Madonna and Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe ) they were easy to climb and well worth the effort.
The views were beautiful and the chapel at the top of Saint-Michel was such a wonderful place of peace.
It was built in 969 AD by Bishop Godescalc to celebrate his return from his pilgrimage to Compostel.
It is maybe the visit of many, many pilgrims since then, that has given this place such an amazing feeling.
We attended Mass at the cathedral in the prayer chapel. There is a daily Mass for pilgrims every day at 07.00.
We shall begin our next stage by attending on the day of departure.
We wandered around the town and had our ears open to finding ‘Trevor and Carol from Canada’ whom we had been
following for many days (their names were in visitors’ books and once even written in the sand in a forest!).
As we sat on the train to begin our journey home the next day, we were joined by Pia and Joseph whom we had met in La Fougal.
Changing trains in Lyon was quite a shock - we had been with nature for previous 11 days and the number of bustling people
was so different. We found a very small cafe and had the most delicious ‘real’ hot chocolate and delicious pastry.
It was a lovely time away and we look forward to the next stage - God willing.
