The old city of Burdorf is full of history, but we passed most of it by as we had already
been their on a few occasions, notably for the 200th centenary celebration of the great fire of Burgdorf.
It is well worth spending a day in Burgdorf if you've never been there before!
We had deviated from the signposted Jakobsweg (Route 4) from Solothurn,
taking a detour along the river Emme to Burgdorf, but now we head back to it.
From Burgdorf, we cut across the Emmental towards Bern, over Zimmerberg
and down to Krauchthal, once a thriving medieval village with castles and monasteries,
but now famous only for its high security prison. There we picked up the route, and came across various
resting places for pilgrims. The most notable was the Waldhulsi am Klosterweg at the top of the wooded hill
after Krauchtal, fully equipped with wood stove! From there we went down to Utzigen castle,
now an old people's home, then to Boll and its wide valley, and over the Dentenberg to Rüfenacht!
(Embarrassingly, Angus got lost in the woods going down to our house!)
