The day was lovely but very challenging! We left early and stopped to shop for lunch.
Climbing up out of the village on the other side of the Rhone we came across many impressive
views over the river. We climbed more and more with the occasional dip.
There was the odd open pastoral area which was apparently common in earlier times but
there were mostly scrub lands. We stopped for lunch outside a hunting lodge which was quite
a cold spot- We were surrounded by fir trees and paths such as around where we live.
After this we began a serious climb which was quite difficult. After a snack to revive us a little,
we began our decent ignoring the sign to the highest point as we felt we were as high as we wanted
to go! The way down was pleasant enough opening out and passing through hamlets. We finally came
across a church at St.Maurice de Rotherens but it was closed but there was a toilet.
We stopped for a snack at Grésin in front of a church which was also closed but the mayor
came out of the Marie to give us a stamp. Further on we came across a barn where we could
stop for a drink and there was also a stamp - some kind person had set that up. Up and over
yet another hill we defended towards St.Genex but on the decent was a church (Assumption)
which was open, in fact the gentleman arrived to lock it for the night and we were able to
thank him for his work. As we were talking our host for the night turned up on a bicycle
as he had begun to worry that we had not yet appeared. He then took us to his home.
This turned out to be one of our longest days. The comfortable room was most welcome (as was the shower!)
