Bugnei to Oberalp

28th September 2020

Bugnei via Sedrun to a snow covered Oberalp pass

Now on the Rhein-Reuss-Rhone Way

We returned to Bugnei railway stop and crossed the viaduct to Sedrun. From there we wound along the side of the valley, across desolate, half-frozen, marshy hillsides, across a golf course (beware of flying golf balls, said the sign), and then on to the final climb. The path took a fairly direct route up to the pass, sometimes next to the railway, with the road winding its way up hairpin bends far below us. At times it was quite difficult trudging through the soft snow, and in the end we followed the road to the top. There we were greeted with a lighthouse, marking the source of the Rhine, although the official source of the Rhine is Lake Toma, off to the left of our path. We decided that the snow was too deep and slushy to continue down the other side of the pass as originally planned, so we took the train back.
