Assieu to Chavanay

25th September 2019

The Rhone, hills, vineyards, roads, and an atomic power station!

Crossing the Rhone

Before leaving Assieu, we stopped in the village for bread and sausage, and then headed off into the fields. Seeing what looked like hunters in the fields, we wondered what was taking there attention on the ground. Sue could not resist asking them and they answered that they were collecting mushrooms! There was a lot of track until Clonas sur Varèze. We met up with the Germans there and stopped for a coffee and got a stamp from the Mairie. After that it was mostly road and very dangerous road at that. We had been looking forward to Chavanay but it was disappointing and, as is often the case, arriving over lunch time, everything was shut. We met up with Linda from Zürich. Climbing out of the town we found a lovely renovated chapel dedicated to St. Jacques. After another rain shower it began to warm up. Arriving at our accommodation just before Bessey, we met the mother of our hostess. She had left us a basic supper. It is a very nice place albeit basic with a compost toilet. Sue managed to wash some clothes (helped by having a machine to spin and the sun to dry). The owner came by (with a mouthful of food) to welcome us but at 20.00 we had not seen his wife and had no idea about breakfast. She turned up at 20.40 and left us some almond milk but no fresh bread. That which we had was at least a day (or more) old.
